Speaking Personally

Lately its seemed like the universe is speaking to me about Vitamin D3. Last week at the Annual Gathering Jolie Root mentioned it enough that I made two notations.  This afternoon Zorba Paster was talking up the benefits of 1000 IU of D3 daily on NPR.  I don't expect to live forever but its just common sense to shave the odds for a better longer life in my favor.

Shaving the odds also seems to be working for me in other areas.  In April my brother introduced me to veggie burgers.  I've adopted them as my standard breakfast.   They also take the place of fast food when I need to eat a quick meal.  The veggie burgers work well with an increased emphasis on whole grains and information from recent diet research. These small changes resulted in about one pound a week weight loss during the last month.

Now if I can just shave the odds in building a Bluetooth home network. I've ordered this cell phone.  Listening to the review a second time  I notice he said TracFone had disabled Bluetooth pairing except for headphones.  So I probably will be getting these but will not get this or this.  Hmm...I wonder if its possible to unlock the pairing features?  I will google up the answer...presently.

'Child 44

This new entry in the suspense/thriller genre has an entertaining twist that separates it from the run-of-the-mill hunt for a serial killer story. It takes place in the Stalinist Russia of the 1950's, where it's hard to tell the difference between the murderer and his state paid pursuers.

The author, Tom Rob Smith, has produced an engaging page-turner. But in today's publishing climate good writing doesn't guarantee publication. Smith's solution to the publishing industry's obsession with tried-and-true formulas, and its paradoxical insistence on exploring new territory at the same time, is to put his protagonist, MGB officer Leo Demidov, in an environment that is every bit as murderous as the killer is....'

"In spite of the recent statement from the Vatican that Synod’s vote created new obstacles to unity between the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches, two facts remain: Rome’s official stance is still non-recognition of all Anglican orders, male and female, and the Anglican Church has had women bishops for the last 20 years. The question remains as to why the vote presents a fresh obstacle?"

"I am glad the Bureau of Land Management has arrived at this good decision. Nevada is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy and is poised to lead a global clean energy revolution.  "We need to do all we can to encourage public and private investment in projects to develop this amazing potential."

'Problem right now is how many sides would welcome war. "U.S. Plays Down Military Showdown" is a couple of quotes from Gates and an Undersecretary of State, meaning two counties heard from but hardly the "U.S." that matters right now on this subject (Bush-Cheney). Both, in my mind, have no problem with an Israeli strike on their watch that could easily suck us into combat. Time is short.

McCain's presidential bid, as Charlie Black notes openly, benefits from scenarios of terror or conflict, so cue up the Beach Boys.

Obama would not be helped.'

'Tests do more than just measure learning. Tests are learning events. That is, testing forces retrieval of incompletely learned material and that very act of retrieval is a rehearsal process that helps to make the learning more permanent. Testing, and not actual studying, is the key factor on whether or not learning is consolidated into longer term memory.'
